Virginia ACNM represents and supports Advanced Practice Midwives in the Commonwealth. Certified Nurse-Midwives and Certified Midwives are federally recognized as Advanced Practice Midwives. The scope of practice is defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and includes care for individuals from puberty to post-menopause for primary care; sexual and reproductive health; care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period; family planning; and normal newborn care during the first 28 days of life.
